The valence is + 2, + 3 and + 4. The first ionization energy is 6.84 ev.  The surface of zirconium is easy to form a layer of oxide film with luster,  so the appearance of zirconium is similar to that of steel.  It has corrosion resistance, soluble in hydrofluoric acid and aqua regia. At high temperature, it can react with non-metallic elements and many metal elements to form solid solution compounds
